I lift my eyes 2

What is a monotype?

Each painting is created on a gelatine plate with paints that remain wet for an extended time.  When the artwork is completed, card is laid over the top and a single print is taken.  The image can be made only once, unlike most printmaking which allows for multiple originals.  At times a ‘ghost print’ is taken where the remaining paint is lifted from the plate, creating a lighter image.  This versatile method of creating art has been used through the ages with many variations from old masters such as Degas and Rembrandt to modern-day painters.
